Who needs this medical?
If you work offshore and you need to get there by helicopter, you need to have your shoulder width measurement taken to determine whether you are “regular” or “extra broad” (XBR).
This measurement ensures passenger seat allocation for safety. XBR passengers have allocated seats near appropriately sized emergency exits, while regular passengers have more flexibility in their seat allocation.
Re-measurement is recommended regularly, especially for XBR passengers, and should be aligned with other offshore certificates renewal dates.
What is involved in the assessment
This measurement is conducted by appropriately trained personnel.
The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes. It involves measuring the distance between the most prominent parts of the shoulders, without wearing any clothing, using a measuring rod.
Passengers who have shoulder measurement of 55.9 cm or less are classified as “regular”, and passengers with measurement of more than 55.9 are classified as “XBR”.
What do I need to bring with me?
The shoulder measurement is usually required in addition to the standard OEUK medical, so the requirement to bring a government issued photo ID (i.e. passport, driving license, national ID card) is valid as well.
